The Kamo River (鴨川) flows through central Kyoto, and during summer (May–September) restaurants along its banks construct noryo-yuka (納涼床, 'cool riverbed platforms') — wooden decks extending over the water where diners eat while river breezes provide natural cooling. Over 90 restaurants participate, from casual izakaya to kaiseki establishments.

The tradition dates to the 16th century when merchant classes began enjoying evening cool by the river. Modern platforms accommodate 20–100 diners depending on restaurant size, creating a continuous dining corridor along the river's edge — uniquely Kyoto summer spectacle.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Restaurant selection:** Budget options (¥3,000–5,000): Bistro Janjan (ビストロじゃんじゃん, French-Japanese fusion), Ganko Takasegawa Nijoen (がんこ高瀬川二条苑, casual kaiseki). Mid-range (¥6,000–10,000): Wa Yamamura (和やまむら, seasonal Japanese), Asuka (あすか, tofu kaiseki). Premium (¥12,000–20,000): Hyotei (瓢亭, 3-Michelin star kaiseki). First-timers: choose mid-range for balance of quality and cost. **Timing advantage:** Early season (May) and late season (September) see cooler evenings making platforms more comfortable — July–August can be hot and humid despite river breeze. Lunch platform service (¥2,000–4,000) offers same views at lower prices with less crowding. Weekday lunches rarely require reservations. **Walking the river:** Even without dining reservation, walking the Kamo River paths at dusk (18:00–19:30) provides free spectacle — the continuous platforms lit with lanterns, diners silhouetted against the river, sound of conversation and clinking dishes mixing with flowing water. The west bank (Pontocho side) provides better views of platforms on the east bank and vice versa.
