The Mazda Museum (マツダミュージアム) in Hiroshima's Fuchu district offers an in-depth look at Mazda Motor Corporation's history, technology, and manufacturing processes, including a guided tour of an active production line where vehicles are assembled. Founded in Hiroshima in 1920 as a cork manufacturer, Mazda evolved into an automotive innovator, particularly famous for developing and commercializing the rotary (Wankel) engine — the only automaker to successfully produce rotary-powered cars at scale, including the iconic RX-7 and RX-8 sports cars.
The museum tour (90 minutes, reservation required) begins with exhibits showcasing Mazda's heritage vehicles — from the 1960 R360 Coupe (Japan's first mass-produced minicar) to the 1991 Le Mans-winning 787B rotary race car. The rotary engine section explains the unique triangular rotor design, advantages (compact, smooth, high power-to-weight ratio), and challenges (fuel efficiency, emissions) that eventually led to rotary production ending in 2012. The tour's highlight is the factory floor visit — a rare opportunity to see an active assembly line producing Mazda3, CX-30, and MX-5 Miata models. Visitors walk elevated platforms above the production line, observing robots welding chassis, workers installing engines, and quality inspections. For automotive enthusiasts and engineering students, the Mazda Museum provides educational insight into Japanese manufacturing precision and Mazda's unconventional engineering philosophy.
