Iki Island, accessible by ferry from Karatsu or Hakata, is a 138-square-km island in the Genkai Sea with exceptional archaeological significance (it was the center of the ancient Iki-koku kingdom described in 3rd-century Chinese records) and excellent coastal diving. Most importantly, it is reachable from Karatsu as a day trip, and offers an island pace, clear water, and extraordinary seafood at prices that reflect the absence of tourist infrastructure rather than any lack of quality.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Island circuits:** Iki's 88km coastal road circuit by bicycle (full day, ¥1,500 rental) passes sea caves, Harunotsuji archaeological park (Japan's most complete Yayoi period site), and a whisky distillery (Iki Single Malt, using barley and Iki seawater) open for tasting. No roads have traffic lights on the island. **Iki urchin:** Iki produces what many seafood buyers consider Japan's finest sea urchin (uni) — the murasaki variety fed on Iki's dense kelp beds. Available fresh at Ashibe Port market; the difference from mainland supermarket uni is absolute.
