**Photography timing:** The torii faces east, making sunrise the optimal photography time — the rising sun backlights the gate creating golden glow and silhouette. Sunset works but is backlit from viewer perspective (less dramatic). Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to set up; weekends see 20–30 photographers claiming spots. Calm water is essential for reflection shots — check wind forecast and avoid windy days. The gate is 30m offshore, requiring zoom lens (70–200mm minimum) for frame-filling shots. **Water level variation:** Lake Biwa's water level fluctuates seasonally — summer rainy season (June–July) raises water level making the torii appear to float; winter dry season (January–February) lowers water, revealing more of the support pillars (less magical). Typhoon season (September) brings high waves that crash against the torii dramatically. Check recent visitor photos online to gauge current water level before making special trip. **Access challenge:** The shrine's location is inconvenient — 40-min walk from station is along busy highway with no sidewalk (dangerous). Taxi (¥800–1,000 each way) is recommended but taxis are scarce in the area; arrange return pickup with driver. Alternatively, rent a car in Kyoto and drive (50 min, parking free).
