Engyoji Temple (円教寺) sits atop Mt. Shosha (書写山, 371m), a sprawling mountain monastery founded in 966 CE. The complex includes dozens of buildings scattered across the forested peak — main hall, pagoda, dining hall, bell tower, and monks' quarters connected by mountain paths. The remote location and atmospheric wooden structures made it a filming location for 'The Last Samurai' (2003) and NHK historical dramas.

Access requires ropeway to mid-mountain, then 20-minute forest walk to the main temple precincts. The elevation and forest setting create mystical atmosphere — morning mist often shrouds the buildings, and the sound of temple bells echoes through cedar groves. This is one of Kansai's most atmospheric temple complexes, rivaling Kyoto's famous sites but with fraction of the visitors.
