Tosa Washi Papermaking

**Workshop details:** The papermaking workshop runs continuously from 9:30–16:00 (last entry 15:30). No reservation needed for individuals; groups of 10+ should call ahead. The instructor speaks limited English, but the process is hands-on and visual — easy to follow. **What you make:** You create a single A4-sized sheet of washi using a su (bamboo screen) and hinoki (cypress) frame. The pulp is pre-prepared; you scoop, shake, and drain. The instructor will help you add decorative elements (pressed flowers, colored fibers, gold leaf). Your sheet is pressed and dried on-site; you can take it home the same day or have it mailed (domestic Japan only). **Types of washi:** The museum shop sells various Tosa washi products: stationery, bookmarks, lampshades, fans, and sheets for calligraphy. The thinnest washi (tengujo) is almost transparent and used for restoration work; the thickest (danshi) is used for printing woodblocks. Prices range from ¥300 (postcards) to ¥10,000 (large decorative sheets). **Papermaking villages:** Ino-cho and the nearby village of Kaminokawa are the historic centers of Tosa washi production. A few artisan workshops still operate — the museum can arrange visits, but advance notice (1 week) and Japanese language ability are required. **Combine with Niyodo River:** Ino is on the lower Niyodo River. After the museum, drive 30 minutes upstream to Nakatsu Gorge for the 'Niyodo Blue' experience. This makes an excellent full-day cultural + nature loop. **Best season:** Year-round. The museum is indoors and climate-controlled. Papermaking workshops are popular during rainy days (June, September).
