Anpanman — the bread-headed superhero with a heart of gold — is one of Japan's most beloved characters, especially among young children. Created by Takashi Yanase, who was born in Kochi Prefecture, Anpanman embodies kindness, selflessness, and the simple joy of helping others. The character has appeared in hundreds of books, TV episodes, and films since 1973, and remains a cultural icon.

The Yanase Takashi Anpanman Museum in Kami City is dedicated to Yanase's life and work. The museum displays original Anpanman illustrations, storyboards, and animations, along with interactive exhibits where children can meet life-sized Anpanman statues, enter recreated scenes from the stories, and watch exclusive short films. The museum is surrounded by a hillside park with outdoor sculptures and play areas.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Who should visit:** The museum is designed for families with young children (ages 2–8), but Anpanman fans of all ages will enjoy it. The exhibits are playful and interactive — even non-Japanese speakers can appreciate the art and animations. **Highlights:** The 'Yanase Takashi Gallery' on the second floor displays original watercolor illustrations from Anpanman books — the art is surprisingly detailed and beautiful. The 'Anpanman Theater' screens exclusive short films (15 min, Japanese only, but visual storytelling is clear). The outdoor 'Poetry Garden' has bronze sculptures of Yanase's characters scattered among the trees. **Gift shop:** The museum shop sells Anpanman merchandise you won't find elsewhere: limited-edition plushies, illustrated books, stationery, and regional Kochi-themed Anpanman goods (like Anpanman holding katsuo tataki). Prices are reasonable (¥500–3,000). **Combine with Ryuga Cave:** The museum is 15 min by car from Ryuga Cave. This pairing works well for families — cave adventure in the morning, Anpanman Museum in the afternoon. **Getting there without a car:** Take the JR Dosan Line from Kochi to Nokichi Station (20 min), then taxi to the museum (10 min, ¥1,500). On weekends, a shuttle bus runs from Nokichi Station (¥200 round-trip). **Cultural note:** Anpanman's philosophy — 'use your own body to help others' (he literally gives pieces of his bread head to hungry people) — reflects Japanese values of self-sacrifice and community. Understanding this makes the character more meaningful.
