Uji, aux portes de Kyoto, est la patrie du thé matcha japonais. La rue Byodoin-omotesando regorge de maisons de thé centenaires où déguster un matcha de la plus haute qualité, des glaces au thé vert et des soba parfumées au thé. Le temple Byodoin, dont le Pavillon du Phénix figure sur la pièce de 10 yens, est inscrit au Patrimoine mondial.
