Free samples are offered at pickle and tea vendors — accept politely. **Morning vs afternoon:** The market is freshest 10:00–12:00 when morning deliveries are displayed and vendors are energetic. Afternoon (15:00+) sees items sold out and less enthusiasm. Avoid lunch rush (12:00–13:00) when the arcade becomes impassably crowded. Weekday mornings (10:00–11:00 Tuesday–Thursday) offer the best balance of fresh stock and navigable crowds. **Take-home items:** Kyoto tsukemono (pickles) are ideal souvenirs — vacuum-sealed varieties last 2 weeks unrefrigerated (check labels). Shichimi togarashi (seven-spice blend) from specialist vendors (¥800–1,500) is fresher than supermarket versions. Avoid fresh tofu/yuba unless consuming same-day (no preservatives).
