Yudanaka Onsen (湯田中温泉) is a traditional hot spring town serving as the gateway to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. The town has a 1,350-year history as a healing hot spring, with water rich in sulfur and iron. Unlike touristy Shibu Onsen next door, Yudanaka retains a quiet, working-town atmosphere with local bathhouses (sotoyu) used by residents and a few ryokan catering to visitors.

The town's architecture is traditional wooden buildings with steam vents rising from the streets. Several public bathhouses are open to visitors (¥200–500), and the water is notably hot (42–45°C) with a strong sulfur smell. Yudanaka serves as a practical base for visiting the snow monkeys — affordable accommodation, easy train access from Nagano, and authentic onsen culture without the crowds. The town is also the terminus of the Nagano Dentetsu Line, with a charming retro station building.

**Public bathhouse tour:** Yudanaka has several sotoyu (public bathhouses). Seifuso (世富草, ¥500, traditional wooden building) is the most atmospheric — hot water (44°C), sulfur-rich, with a small rotenburo (outdoor bath). Kaede no Yu (楓の湯, ¥500, modern facility) is larger and more tourist-friendly. Visit bathhouses in the evening (18:00–20:00) when locals gather. **Best ryokan:** Yudanaka Yumoto (湯田中湯本, ¥12,000–20,000 per night) is a traditional ryokan with in-house sulfur hot springs and excellent kaiseki dinners using Shinshu ingredients (Nagano beef, wild vegetables, river fish). The rotenburo (outdoor bath) overlooks the town and mountains. **Day-trip itinerary:** Arrive from Nagano (9:00), store luggage at Yudanaka Station, bus to Jigokudani (10:00), see snow monkeys (10:30–13:00), return to Yudanaka (14:00), soak in public bathhouse (15:00), return to Nagano (17:00). This tight schedule is doable but overnight stay allows more relaxed pace. **Retro station charm:** Yudanaka Station is the Nagano Dentetsu Line terminus. The station building (rebuilt 2011 but retains retro design) and platform have a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. The station's footbath (free, on platform) lets you soak your feet while waiting for trains — quintessentially Japanese quirk.
