別府の「地獄」は入浴には熱すぎ化学的に極端な、純粋に見るためにつくられた七つの壮観な地熱の泉だ。各地獄が異なる自然現象を見せる: 海地獄は溶けた鉱物でコバルトの青、血の池地獄は酸化鉄で鮮やかな赤、竜巻地獄は30分ごとに煮え立つ水を20m噴き上げる。水温は95℃から99.5℃に及ぶ。

別府は（イエローストーンに次ぐ）世界2位の地熱地帯の上に座し、2800超の活きた温泉源を持つ、この見る地獄は地下の熱活動のほんの一部に過ぎない。

七つの地獄は二つの地区に分かれる: 鉄輪に5、柴石に2。共通券: 2200円（7つ全て）、個別入場各450円。8:00〜17:00。鉄輪は別府駅からバス（20分）で。

インサイダーガイド

**最良の順路:** 観光バスが来る前の開場（8:00）に海地獄（最大・最も絵になる）から始める。七地獄の巡回は着実に歩けば2.5時間。タオルを持参 — 湯気の湿気が服を湿らせる。 **鬼石坊主地獄の穴場:** この地獄は7地獄の券に含まれるがよく飛ばされる。泡立つ灰色の泥が泡が浮いて弾けて「坊主頭」の形をつくる（坊主＝禿げた僧） — 見て催眠的で空いている。 **地獄蒸し:** 地獄の蒸気で茹でた卵と野菜が海地獄とかまど地獄で売られる（卵5個300円）。鉱泉の水が卵に微かな硫黄の風味を。地獄の蒸気で蒸したプリン（地獄蒸しプリン、350円）が看板のデザートだ。
