**Getting tickets when the website says sold out:** Reservations open on the 1st of each month for tours two months ahead—April cherry blossom tours book out in 90 minutes, November foliage tours in under an hour. If you miss it, don't give up. They release about 10 tickets per tour. Weekday mornings have the best odds. Friday afternoons and anything in November: forget it. **What you're actually seeing on the tour:** The guide will walk you along a pond that takes 40 minutes to circle. You'll stop at five tea houses, each built for a different purpose: Shokin-tei for moon-viewing, Shoka-tei for reading poetry, Geppa-ro for watching fireflies in June. The checkered window at Shokin-tei—blue and yellow rice paper in a grid—is the most photographed detail, and yes, it's as beautiful as the pictures. The guide explains that the garden uses shakkei (borrowed scenery)—the designers positioned trees to frame views of Arashiyama mountains in the distance, making them part of the composition. On cloudy days, you lose the mountains and the whole effect flattens. Pray for clear weather. **Why this costs ¥0 and feels like it should cost ¥5,000:** Katsura belongs to the Imperial Household Agency, which means it's technically public property maintained by taxpayers. Tours are free but brutally controlled—no wandering, no touching, no stepping off the path. The point isn't to let you experience the garden freely. The point is to preserve it exactly as it was in 1615 while allowing limited access. You'll spend 60 minutes walking gravel paths in a group of 20, stopping where the guide stops, taking photos when allowed. It feels more like a museum visit than a garden stroll. If you want spontaneity, go to Sento Imperial Palace instead (also free, less famous, looser rules). If you want perfection—every stone placed with intention, every view curated—this is it. Just don't expect to sit down and enjoy the pond. You're here to admire someone else's idea of beauty, not make your own.
