1607年に完成した熊本城は日本三名城の一つにして防御建築の傑作だ。2016年の地震が城を激しく傷めた — 天守の瓦が崩れ、石垣が崩壊し、いくつかの櫓が壊れた。進行中の復旧（完成目標2037年）は訪問者に伝統の城の修復技法をその場で観察させる。

加藤清正による城の元の設計は、湾曲した「武者返し」の石垣（登れない）や広大な地下の貯蔵などの工夫を含んだ。城地は98ヘクタールに及び、日本最大級の城郭群の一つだ。

熊本市中央区本丸1-1。熊本駅から徒歩30分または市電10分。9:00〜17:00。入場: 800円。復旧の見学区域に入れる。

**復旧の見学通路:** 特別の高架の歩廊（2021年開通）が、修復中の傷んだ屋根と石垣に訪問者を目の高さで近づける。再建の過程を見る眺め — モルタルなしの石積みなど伝統技法を見る — は完成品より教育的だ。入場は城の切符に込み。 **夜間照明:** 城は毎晩23:00まで照らされる。一部再建された状態が異様な美をなす — 400年の壁に現代の足場が劇的に照らされる。二の丸公園（時間外は無料）から見るのが最良だ。 **本丸御殿の内部:** 御殿の再建（2008年完成、地震を耐えた）は狩野派の絵と金箔を再現した部屋を含む。昭君之間（謁見の間）が江戸期の工芸の極みを表す。
