Every January (second Sunday), Sanjusangen-do Temple hosts Toshiya (通し矢) — a coming-of-age archery ceremony where 20-year-old women in furisode (long-sleeved kimono) shoot arrows down the temple's 120-meter hall. The tradition dates to the Edo period when samurai tested skills by attempting to shoot the hall's length; the current record is 8,133 consecutive hits.

The modern ceremony is less competitive and more celebratory — young women celebrating adulthood (成人の日, Seijin no Hi) participate in traditional archery as a rite of passage. Spectators can watch from the temple veranda (free, first-come seating).

インサイダーガイド

**Viewing strategy:** The ceremony runs continuously 8:00–15:30 with archers rotating in shifts. Early morning (8:00–10:00) sees serious competitors; midday (11:00–14:00) sees more casual participants. The contrast between formal furisode kimono (¥500,000+ silk garments) and athletic archery posture creates striking visual. Photographers cluster at the north end where archers shoot southward — arrive early for this position. **Cultural context:** Toshiya coincides with Seijin no Hi (Coming of Age Day, 2nd Monday in January) when all Japanese 20-year-olds celebrate adulthood. Across Japan, young people attend ceremonies in formal wear (furisode for women, suits for men). Sanjusangen-do's archery ceremony combines this modern celebration with Edo-period tradition, creating unique photo opportunity — kimono-clad women wielding traditional bows in ancient temple. **Post-ceremony market:** The temple grounds host stalls selling amazake (sweet rice drink), grilled mochi, and good-luck charms for new adults. The festive atmosphere contrasts with the temple's usual quiet. Even if not particularly interested in archery, the ceremony showcases Japanese tradition, coming-of-age culture, and kimono fashion in authentic context — worth attending if visiting Kyoto in early January.
