The Amakusa Islands (120+ islands, population 100,000) were a center of hidden Christian faith during the 250-year prohibition. After Francis Xavier introduced Christianity in the 1560s, the faith went underground following the failed Shimabara Rebellion (1637–38). Churches built after the 1873 ban-lifting dot the islands — Sakitsu Church (UNESCO site) is the most famous, built directly over the site where hidden Christians were forced to step on fumie (images of Christ) to prove apostasy.

The waters around Amakusa also host 200+ wild dolphins year-round — boat tours guarantee 98% sighting rate.

Access: 2 hours by car from Kumamoto City via Amakusa Pearl Line bridges (¥1,200 toll). Dolphin watching boats: depart Michino-eki Dolphin Center, ¥2,500/person, 1 hour.

**Sakitsu village walk:** The church is striking for its location in a traditional fishing village — wooden houses, narrow alleys, and the Gothic church tower rising incongruously. Walk the waterfront 1km path from the church to the Suwa Shrine (the shrine where fumie-stepping occurred) to understand the spatial relationship between persecution and faith. **Dolphin timing:** Morning tours (9:00, 10:30) have the highest sighting rates. The dolphins are wild Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that feed in the channel year-round. Bring waterproof phone case for photos. **Amakusa pottery:** The islands produce Amakusa porcelain using local clay (the same clay shipped to Arita for 400 years). The Maruo Pottery (丸尾焼) studio offers 2-hour throwing workshops (¥3,000) — the white clay is exceptionally smooth to work.
