구마모토성 — 지진에서 살아남아 복구되고 있는 성
1607년 완공된 구마모토성은 일본 3대 명성 중 하나이자 방어 건축의 걸작이다. 2016년 지진으로 성이 심각한 피해를 입었다 — 천수각 지붕 기와가 무너지고 석벽이 부서졌으며 여러 망루가 파괴되었다. 진행 중인 복구 작업(완공 목표 2037년) 덕분에 방문객은 전통적인 성 보수 기법을 실시간으로 관찰할 수 있다.
가토 기요마사가 설계한 원래의 구조에는 (기어오르기가 불가능한) 곡선형 '무샤가에시' 벽과 방대한 지하 창고 같은 혁신 기술이 포함되어 있다. 성 부지는 98헥타르에 달해, 일본에서 가장 큰 성곽 단지 중 하나다.
