Heijo Palace (平城宮跡, Heijo-kyo) was the imperial palace during Nara's time as Japan's capital (710–784 AD), occupying 120 hectares in northern Nara. The palace complex contained the emperor's residence, government offices, and ceremonial halls. After the capital moved to Kyoto, the palace was dismantled and the site returned to farmland.

Several palace buildings have been reconstructed based on excavation findings: the Suzaku Gate (朱雀門, the palace's massive main gate, 25m wide and 20m tall, rebuilt 1998), the Daigokuden (大極殿, Great Audience Hall, rebuilt 2010), and section of the East Palace Garden. The reconstructions use 8th-century techniques (no nails, wooden joinery, cypress construction) to demonstrate Nara Period architecture. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage park with museums displaying excavated artifacts. Walking the vast grounds with reconstructed buildings and grassy fields creates a sense of the capital's former scale.

**Scale appreciation:** Heijo Palace occupied 120 hectares — the site today is mostly open grassland with scattered reconstructed buildings. This emptiness actually conveys the palace's original scale more effectively than dense reconstruction would. Walk from Suzaku Gate (south entrance) to Daigokuden (north, 800m) to experience the processional approach that visiting emissaries would have walked. The distance creates anticipation, emphasizing the emperor's remoteness and power. Cherry blossoms line the approach path (early April) and cosmos flowers bloom in autumn (October), adding seasonal beauty to the historical landscape. **Daigokuden (Great Audience Hall):** The reconstructed hall (rebuilt 2010, ¥2.5 billion project) is the palace's centerpiece — a massive wooden structure (44m wide, 27m tall) with vermillion columns and green tile roof. The interior houses a replica throne where the emperor received foreign envoys and conducted state ceremonies. The hall demonstrates the Chinese Tang Dynasty architectural influence on Nara Period Japan. Climb the hall's interior platform to view the throne and surrounding scale model of the full palace complex. The reconstruction accuracy (based on excavated foundations and historical documents) makes this a rare authentic glimpse of 8th-century imperial architecture. **Museum mokkan display:** The Heijo Palace Museum displays 60,000+ excavated wooden tablets (mokkan) — administrative records, delivery tags, practice calligraphy — that survived because the site became farmland and remained waterlogged, preserving wood. The tablets document daily palace operations: food deliveries, tax records, personnel assignments. Reading translated examples reveals the bureaucracy's mundane details — a jar of pickles sent from Kyushu, a monk's complaint about his room assignment. This grassroots historical evidence contrasts with elite histories, showing how the palace functioned as a working administrative center, not just ceremonial space.
