The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (明石海峡大橋) spans 3,911 meters across the Akashi Strait, holding the world record for longest central span (1,991m) of any suspension bridge. Completed in 1998, the bridge connects Kobe with Awaji Island, supporting the highway link to Shikoku. The engineering feat withstands typhoons, earthquakes, and ship collisions using seismic-resistant design — it survived the 1995 Hanshin earthquake during construction.

The bridge is nicknamed 'Pearl Bridge' (パールブリッジ) for its nighttime illumination — LED lights change colors seasonally and for special events, reflecting on the strait waters below. The Bridge Exhibition Center (橋の科学館) explains construction and offers bridge walk tours along maintenance catwalks 300m above the sea.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Bridge walk tour (maintenance catwalk):** This guided tour allows walking along the bridge's maintenance catwalks — metal grate walkways suspended 300m above the strait with only railings separating you from open air. The experience is thrilling for heights-tolerant visitors: feeling the bridge sway slightly in wind, watching ships pass far below, and seeing the massive suspension cables up close. Tours are Japanese-language but the physical experience transcends language barriers. Book 1–2 weeks ahead through Bridge Exhibition Center website. **Maiko Marine Promenade:** This 150m glass-floor walkway extends under the bridge from the Kobe-side anchorage, suspended 47m above the sea. The transparent floor panels allow looking down at the strait below — disorienting but safe. The ¥310 admission provides bridge views from beneath, showing the scale of steel structure overhead. Good alternative if bridge walk tour is fully booked or too adventurous. **Illumination schedule:** The bridge lights up nightly (sunset–23:00 typically) with LED colors changing hourly. Special patterns occur for holidays (Christmas, New Year, Golden Week). The Pearl Bridge name comes from white/pearl coloring (default state). Best viewed from Maiko Park (free, Kobe side) or Awaji Service Area. The illumination is pretty but not essential — the bridge's engineering scale is impressive even in daylight.
