Omoriyama Zoo — location in Akita, Akita City

Akita · Akita City

39.7419°N, 140.0444°E

Akita City Omoriyama Zoo (秋田市大森山動物園) is one of Japan's few zoos emphasizing cold-climate species and winter adaptations. The zoo houses Siberian tigers, Amur leopards, red pandas, Japanese serow, and Japanese macaques (snow monkeys), with exhibit design focused on natural habitats and educational interpretation. In winter (December-February), the zoo transforms into a 'Snow Zoo' — animals are most active, Siberian tigers play in snow, and red pandas' thick fur is fully puffed.

The zoo's 'Animals in Winter' program (冬の動物園) explains evolutionary adaptations: how Siberian tigers' wide paws act as snowshoes, how red pandas' bushy tails wrap around their bodies for warmth, how snow monkeys huddle for thermoregulation. Summer (July-August) is hot (30°C+) and animals are lethargic; winter is the optimal visiting season. The zoo also has a petting area with goats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, plus a small amusement park with a Ferris wheel offering views of Akita City.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Winter visit advantages:** December-February, the 'Snow Zoo' program includes keeper talks (11:00, 13:30, Japanese only) explaining cold-weather adaptations. Siberian tigers are notably more active in winter, pacing, jumping, and playing in snow — summer heat makes them lethargic. Red pandas fluff their tails and curl into balls, demonstrating insulation techniques. Snow monkeys huddle in groups, grooming each other to maintain social bonds and warmth. Winter attendance is 30% lower than summer, providing uncrowded viewing. **Feeding times:** Animal feeding schedules (posted at entrance) are the best times to observe active behavior. Key feedings: Siberian tigers (10:00, 15:00), red pandas (10:30, 14:30), Japanese macaques (11:30, 13:30). Arrive 10 minutes early to secure viewing positions. Keepers often provide commentary (Japanese) about diet and behavior. **Red panda favorites:** Omoriyama Zoo is regionally famous for its red panda breeding program (5-6 individuals). The red panda exhibit has glass tunnels allowing close-up views of paws, bellies, and faces as the animals walk overhead. Photographing red pandas napping on tree branches is a visitor obsession — bring a telephoto lens (70-200mm) for detail shots. **Children's area:** The petting zoo (ふれあいコーナー) is free with admission and allows supervised interaction with goats, rabbits, and guinea pigs (10:00-12:00, 13:00-15:00). Children must wash hands at provided stations before/after contact. This is a highlight for families with young kids. **Amusement rides:** The Ferris wheel (¥400, 12 minutes) offers 360-degree views of Akita City, the Sea of Japan, and Mt. Chokai (鳥海山, 2,236m) on clear days. The ride is separate from zoo admission but provides context for Akita's geography. Other rides (carousel, train, slide) are aimed at children under 10. **Seasonal events:** The zoo hosts 'Night Zoo' (夜の動物園) in mid-August (18:00-21:00, extended hours) when nocturnal animals (owls, bats, civets) are active. Winter illuminations (December-February, 16:00-18:00) light up the zoo with LED displays. Both events require advance ticket purchase (website or convenience stores). **Access practicality:** The bus from Akita Station runs hourly (10:00-15:00 departures). The return bus schedule (last departure around 16:30) limits visit duration to 3-4 hours — sufficient for a thorough zoo tour. Alternatively, taxi costs ¥3,000-3,500 each way. Families with young children may prefer taxis for convenience.
