Botchan Ressha — Vintage Steam Locomotive Replica
The Botchan Ressha is a restored vintage steam locomotive (actually diesel-powered replica) operating as a tourist tram line through central Matsuyama. The train is named after Natsume Soseki's 1906 novel Botchan, which features the protagonist riding Matsuyama's original steam tram. The replica locomotives built in 2001 faithfully recreate the Meiji-era originals with wooden benches, brass fittings, and open-air observation platforms.
The 30-minute round-trip route connects Matsuyama City Station, Okaido shopping district, and Dogo Onsen, providing both transportation and sightseeing experience.
