Horikawa Sightseeing Boat (堀川めぐり) navigates the 3.7km moat surrounding Matsue Castle, passing under 16 bridges (some extremely low-clearance) through the historic samurai district. The a short ride on traditional roofed boats features boat pilots who narrate local history, point out historic sites, and manually lower the boat roof for ultra-low bridges (passengers duck flat).

The moat preserves Matsue's Edo-period castle town layout, with willow trees, stone walls, samurai residences, and traditional gardens visible from water level. Different seasons offer distinct experiences: cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, autumn leaves in November, and kotatsu-heated boats in winter.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Low bridge experience:** Four bridges have ultra-low clearance requiring the roof to drop and passengers to duck completely flat (lying back on seats). The boatman manually cranks the roof down while steering through narrow gaps with centimeters of clearance. The dramatic roof-lowering creates memorable moments — especially when first-timers realize how low they must duck. Children find it thrilling; taller passengers find it nerve-wracking. The lowest bridge (Benten Bridge) has only 60cm clearance during high water — the boat barely fits. **Kotatsu boats (winter):** December through February, boats install kotatsu — traditional heated tables with blankets. Passengers sit with legs under the heated blanket while cruising through snowy landscapes. The combination of cold air, warm kotatsu, and hot drinks (available onboard) creates cozy experience unique to Matsue winters. Book ahead for kotatsu boats (limited availability, popular with Japanese couples seeking romantic winter activity). Temperature: outside 0–5°C, under kotatsu 25–30°C. **Pilot narration:** Boatmen (and women) narrate in Japanese throughout the ride, explaining castle history, pointing out samurai residences, and joking about the low bridges. English audio guides available (¥300 rental) but miss the live personality. Even non-Japanese speakers enjoy the pilots' expressive delivery and physical comedy during bridge passages. Some pilots sing traditional Matsue songs — the musical quality varies pilot-to-pilot but adds local charm.
