Enoshima (江の島) is a small island (0.4km²) connected to the Shonan coast by a 600-meter bridge, crowned with shrines, botanical gardens, observation towers, and sea caves accessible at low tide. The island has been a pilgrimage site for over 1,000 years, sacred to Benzaiten (弁財天, goddess of music, eloquence, and water). The steep paths climbing from sea level to the summit (60m elevation) pass through torii gates, shrine buildings, and restaurants serving fresh seafood, especially Enoshima's famous shirasu (whitebait) and sazae (turban shell).

The island's main attractions include: Enoshima Shrine (three separate shrine buildings scattered across the island), Samuel Cocking Garden (botanical garden with subtropical plants), Sea Candle observation tower (119m total height providing 360° coastal views and Mt. Fuji sightlines), and Iwaya Caves (sea caves carved by wave erosion, illuminated and open to exploration). The island atmosphere mixes sacred pilgrimage site with beach resort — shrine gates and tourist shops coexist, creating a unique character.

**Escalator vs walking:** The island's 60m elevation gain is steep via narrow paths crowded with shops and tourists. The Escar (エスカー) is a series of three outdoor escalators (¥360 total, or ¥1,000 day pass for unlimited up/down) that bypass the climbing — saves 20 min and leg fatigue. However, the walking path passes through atmospheric torii gates, traditional shops selling octopus crackers and seashell souvenirs, and offers better photo opportunities. Recommendation: escalator up (arrive fresh at summit), walk down (easier on knees, browse shops without rushing). **Sea Candle timing:** The observation lighthouse (江の島シーキャンドル) provides panoramic views: Shonan coast, Sagami Bay, Izu Peninsula, and Mt. Fuji (40% visibility winter mornings, check before visit). Optimal timing: arrive 1 hour before sunset (16:00 winter, 18:00 summer), enjoy daylight view including Fuji if clear, stay for sunset over ocean (west-facing), and evening illumination (tower lights up in rotating colors 18:00–20:00). The garden below features seasonal illuminations Nov–Feb creating romantic nightscape. Combo ticket ¥750 covers garden + tower. **Iwaya Caves:** The sea caves (岩屋, iwaya) tunnel 150m into the island's base, accessible only at low tide (check tide schedule online before visit; caves close during high tide and rough seas). The caves were pilgrimage sites where monks meditated; today they're illuminated with colored lights and displays explaining geological formation and folklore (dragons supposedly lived here). The second cave features shrine to Benzaiten. The caves stay cool year-round (15°C) and drip with groundwater — provided candles for atmospheric exploration. Takes 30 min; combines geology with spirituality.
