Fukushu-en (福州園) is a traditional Suzhou-style Chinese garden built in 1992 to commemorate 10 years of sister-city relations between Naha and Fuzhou, China. The garden was designed by Chinese landscape architects and constructed using materials imported from Fuzhou — limestone rocks, roof tiles, decorative elements — creating an authentic Chinese garden aesthetic rare in Japan.

The compact garden (8,500m²) contains all classic Suzhou elements: pavilions over water, zigzag bridges (evil spirits can't turn corners), moon gates, carved lattice windows, and scholar's rocks (太湖石) from Lake Tai. The garden reflects the historical relationship between the Ryukyu Kingdom and Ming/Qing China, when Ryukyuan tributary missions visited Fuzhou regularly.

**Suzhou vs Japanese garden aesthetics:** Chinese gardens emphasize architecture (pavilions, bridges, gates) and dramatic rockwork, versus Japanese gardens' focus on naturalistic landscapes and borrowed scenery. Fukushu-en's zigzag bridges, bright-colored pavilions, and artificial rock formations feel distinctly un-Japanese — this contrast is the garden's educational value. It demonstrates Ryukyu's historical ties to China (stronger than ties to Japan for much of history). **Night illumination:** Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights (18:00–21:00), the garden is illuminated with colored LED lights reflecting on the pond water. The illumination is tasteful (not garish), creating fairy-tale atmosphere as pavilions glow against the dark sky. Night admission is same price (¥200) and sees virtually no crowds — you may have the garden entirely to yourself. Bring mosquito repellent (summer nights). **Historical context:** The garden's location in Kume neighborhood is historically significant — Kume was the residential area for Chinese immigrants (from Fujian province) who served as interpreters, diplomats, and navigators for the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 1300s–1800s. Their descendants (Kumemura people, 久米村人) preserved Chinese language, Confucian education, and cultural practices for 500+ years. The garden sits where the original Chinese settlement stood.
