Hikone's castle town (城下町, jokamachi) preserves the urban layout and atmosphere of an Edo-period samurai district. The Yume Kyobashi Castle Road (夢京橋キャッスルロード) recreates Taisho-era (1912–1926) architecture with white-walled buildings housing crafts shops, cafes, and traditional sweet shops. The parallel street, Shitamachi Stroll (四番町スクエア), maintains more authentic Edo-period machiya (merchant houses).

The castle town demonstrates the strict hierarchical urban planning of feudal Japan — samurai residences near the castle (higher elevation, better land), merchant districts in lower town, with temples and shrines marking district boundaries. Walking these streets reveals how castle-centered city planning shaped Japanese urban development for 300+ years.

**Authentic vs recreated:** Yume Kyobashi is a 1998 tourism development — the Taisho-era architecture is reproduction, not restoration. The street is pleasant but consciously nostalgic (clean, curated, tourist-oriented). For more authentic atmosphere, explore Shitamachi Stroll and the residential streets north of castle — actual Edo-period machiya with worn wood, narrow alleys, and fewer tourists. These areas lack signage and shops but provide genuine historical texture. **Omi beef tasting:** Hikone is in Omi region, home to Omi beef (近江牛) — one of Japan's three premium wagyu brands (with Kobe and Matsusaka). The castle town has multiple Omi beef restaurants: Chikurintei (竹林亭, kaiseki ¥8,000–15,000), Sennaritei Morikage (千成亭森可家, yakiniku ¥5,000–10,000). Lunch sets (¥3,000–5,000) offer affordable sampling. The beef's high marbling (BMS 8–12 grade) produces buttery texture — small portions (100–150g) are filling due to fat content. **Funa-zushi curiosity:** Funa-zushi (鮒ずし) is Lake Biwa's infamous fermented carp sushi — carp packed in rice and salt, fermented 1–3 years until pungent and cheese-like. This is narezushi (熟れ鮨), Japan's ancient fermentation sushi style (modern nigiri evolved from this). The taste is intensely funky — ammonia, blue cheese, fermented fish combined. It's an acquired taste that most Japanese people dislike. Try a small sample (¥500–800) from shops on Yume Kyobashi for culinary adventure; don't order a full portion unless you have strong fermented food tolerance.
