Enryakuji Temple (延暦寺) is a sprawling Buddhist monastery complex atop Mt. Hiei (848m), straddling the border between Kyoto and Shiga prefectures. Founded in 788 by monk Saicho, Enryakuji served as headquarters of the Tendai sect and trained many of Japan's most influential Buddhist teachers. At its peak, the complex housed 3,000 buildings and thousands of warrior monks (sohei) who wielded political power.

The monastery spans three major areas (Todo, Saito, Yokawa) across the mountain, connected by forest paths. The Konpon Chudo Hall houses the 'eternal flame' that has burned continuously for 1,200+ years. The mountain setting, ancient cryptomeria trees, and spiritual atmosphere make Enryakuji one of Japan's most important pilgrimage sites — it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

Yokawa (横川) is 4km away, requiring bus (infrequent service) — it's remote and sees few visitors but offers the most contemplative experience. First-time visitors should prioritize Todo + Saito; serious Buddhist pilgrims visit all three. **Eternal flame significance:** The Konpon Chudo Hall houses the Fumetsu no Hoto (不滅の法灯, inextinguishable dharma light) — an oil lamp that has burned continuously since Saicho lit it in 788 CE (1,200+ years). The lamp went out once during the 1571 Oda Nobunaga attack (when he burned Enryakuji's 3,000 buildings to eliminate warrior monks' power) but was relit from a branch flame at Rissho-in sub-temple.
