The JMSDF Kure Museum (海上自衛隊呉史料館), also known as the 'てつのくじら館' (Iron Whale Museum), offers the rare opportunity to board and explore a real decommissioned submarine — the JS Akishio, a diesel-electric attack submarine that served the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force from 1986 to 2004. The submarine is displayed outdoors, elevated next to the museum building, and visitors walk through its interior from bow to stern, experiencing the claustrophobic reality of submarine operations.

Inside the Akishio, the narrow passageways, low ceilings, and compact compartments reveal how 75 crew members lived and worked for months at a time underwater — bunks stacked three-high, cramped mess hall, control room with periscopes and navigation equipment, and torpedo room with dummy torpedoes. Audio guides (Japanese/English) explain each section's function and daily submarine routines. The museum building's indoor exhibits document Japan's post-WWII maritime defense history, minesweeping operations (JMSDF's critical post-war role removing wartime mines from Japanese waters), and submarine technology. The combination of hands-on submarine exploration and educational exhibits provides an accessible, engaging introduction to naval engineering and modern defense operations, with no glorification of militarism — the focus is on technology, operations, and peacekeeping missions.

**Submarine interior tour:** The Akishio submarine tour begins at the forward section (bow) and exits at the aft (stern), following a one-way path through the vessel. Highlights include the control room with periscope stations (non-functional but visitors can look through replicas), the sonar room, crew quarters with cramped bunks, and the diesel engine compartment. The submarine's interior is authentic — minimal modification was made for public access, so expect tight spaces, low doorways (watch your head), and steep ladders. This realism is the tour's strength; it's impossible not to imagine the psychological strain of months-long underwater deployment in such confined spaces. Photography is allowed throughout. **Minesweeping history exhibits:** The museum dedicates significant space to Japan's post-WWII minesweeping efforts — after 1945, an estimated 65,000+ naval mines remained in Japanese coastal waters, laid by both Japanese and Allied forces. JMSDF's predecessor organizations spent decades clearing these mines, a dangerous and unglamorous task that prevented countless civilian casualties. Exhibits include defused mines, minesweeping equipment, and accounts of the 79 minesweepers who died in post-war clearance operations. This historical section is often overlooked but provides crucial context for Japan's modern pacifist maritime defense posture. **Family-friendly science focus:** Unlike some military museums, the JMSDF Museum emphasizes educational science and technology over combat or weaponry. Interactive exhibits explain submarine buoyancy, sonar principles, and underwater pressure physics, making it suitable for children and non-military enthusiasts. The museum avoids political commentary or nationalistic framing, focusing instead on engineering challenges and peacekeeping roles. This approach makes it an accessible, interesting visit even for those with no particular interest in military history — the submarine itself is the attraction, a floating engineering marvel brought to human scale.
