Takeda Shingen Historical Sites — location in จังหวัดยามานาชิ, Kofu

Takeda Shingen (1521–1573) was one of the most formidable daimyo of Japan's Warring States period, ruling Kai Province (modern Yamanashi) from his base in Kofu. Known as the 'Tiger of Kai,' Takeda commanded legendary cavalry units and engaged in famous battles against rival Uesugi Kenshin. Though Kofu Castle was dismantled during the Meiji era, several significant Takeda sites remain: Takeda Shrine (built on the ruins of his mansion), the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum (housing Takeda armor and battle flags), and the stone walls of Kofu Castle's original foundations.

Takeda Shrine sits on the grounds of Takeda Shingen's original tsutsujigasaki Mansion, surrounded by a moat and stone ramparts that date to the 16th century. The shrine's annual Shingen-ko Festival (early April) features a massive historical reenactment with over 1,000 participants in samurai armor recreating Takeda's army.

**Takeda Shrine omamori:** The shrine sells unique 'victory amulets' (katsumamori) based on Takeda Shingen's battle strategies. The most sought-after is the 'Furinkazan' amulet inscribed with Takeda's famous military philosophy: 'Swift as wind, quiet as forest, fierce as fire, immovable as mountain.' Popular with Japanese business executives and students before exams. **Kofu Castle ruins exploration:** The stone walls and reconstructed gates of Kofu Castle are underappreciated by tourists. The Tenshu-dai (main tower foundation) provides panoramic views of the Kofu Basin with Mt. Fuji visible on clear winter mornings. The castle park includes the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum annex displaying Takeda-era armor — the black-lacquered armor with golden accents is strikingly preserved. **Shingen-ko Festival strategy:** The festival's climax is the 'Koshu Gundan Shusshin' parade (Saturday evening 18:00–20:00) when 1,000 armored participants march through central Kofu carrying torches and battle flags. Arrive 2 hours early to claim viewing spots along Heiwa-dori Avenue. The festival also features horseback archery (yabusame) demonstrations and traditional taiko drumming. **Erin-ji Temple addition:** Located by train from Kofu, Erin-ji Temple served as the Takeda clan's family temple. The temple's rock garden is attributed to the famous monk Muso Soseki. The temple's 'Hall of the Takeda Twenty-Four Generals' displays paintings of Shingen's most trusted commanders — each with detailed battle histories (Japanese text, but visual impact is significant).
