Oshino Hakkai is a collection of eight crystal-clear ponds fed by snowmelt from Mt. Fuji that has filtered through underground lava layers for decades before emerging as spring water of exceptional purity. The ponds range from 4 to 8 meters deep, and their water is so transparent that you can see individual pebbles at the bottom along with rainbow trout swimming in the currents. The largest pond, Wakuike, produces 2.4 million liters of water daily at a constant 13°C year-round.

The site has been a sacred pilgrimage destination since the Edo period, with each pond associated with protective deities. The village retains traditional thatched-roof houses (kayabuki) and water mills powered by the spring outflow. The water is considered some of Japan's finest — visitors can drink directly from designated spots, and locals still use the ponds for washing vegetables and cooling watermelons in summer. The view of the ponds with Mt. Fuji rising behind creates one of Yamanashi's most photographed compositions.

**Photography strategy:** The iconic shot is from the Wakuike Pond platform looking south toward Mt. Fuji, with the pond's turquoise water in the foreground. Morning light (7:00–9:00) provides the best Fuji visibility and side-lighting on the water. Use a polarizing filter to reduce glare and enhance the water's blue-green color. Autumn (October–November) adds red maples to the frame. **Drinking the sacred water:** The water from the eight ponds is safe to drink and famously pure (snowmelt filtered through 20–80 years of underground lava). Designated water-tasting spots include ladles and cups. The water tastes extremely soft (low mineral content) with a faint sweetness. Locals believe drinking from all eight ponds brings good health — a version of spiritual hydration. **Thatched-roof houses:** Several traditional kayabuki farmhouses remain in the village, including Oshino Minzoku Shiryokan (folk museum, ¥300 entry). The houses date from the 18th–19th centuries and display traditional agricultural tools, silk-weaving equipment, and household items. The largest house features a massive central hearth (irori) where fish were smoked in the roof beams. **Crowd avoidance:** Oshino Hakkai receives heavy tour bus traffic, especially from Chinese tourism groups (the site is extremely popular in China). Weekday mornings before 10:00 are quietest. The commercial souvenir area can feel touristy — walk 5 minutes north to the less-visited ponds (Sokonuke Pond, Kagami Pond) for solitude and equally clear water.
