Okinawan pottery is called yachimun and it was concentrated in Tsuboya in Naha until the 1970s, when smoke regulations in a rebuilt city made wood-firing impossible there. Kinjo Jiro, who would become a Living National Treasure, moved his kiln out to Yomitan, and others followed. The result is a village of about nineteen workshops in woodland, built around a shared climbing kiln with a run of red-tiled roofs stepping up the slope.

The work is heavy, thickly glazed and functional — plates, bowls, awamori flasks, shisa — in the browns, greens and cobalt of the tradition, and most workshops sell directly from a shed beside where it is made. Prices are what a working potter charges rather than what a gallery does. The village is free to enter and each workshop keeps its own hours.

Yomitan, Nakagami District. Car recommended — about 15 minutes and 10 km from Ishikawa IC, or about 1 hour from Naha Airport; by bus, route 120 from Naha Airport takes about 2 hours to Oyashi-iriguchi then a short walk. Free to enter, with a shared car park of around 60 free spaces and further parking inside the village. Around 19 workshops, each keeping its own opening hours and rest days. **Each workshop sets its own hours.** There is no village-wide schedule and some close on days others do not. Walking in and finding half of them shut is normal; allow for it. **Find the shared climbing kiln.** The noborigama at the centre, with its stepped red-tiled roofs, is the physical reason the village exists and is still fired collectively. **Buy seconds if you can find them.** Several workshops sell pieces with minor flaws at a discount from a separate shelf. They are the same clay and the same hand. **It grew out of a regulation.** Tsuboya could no longer wood-fire in a rebuilt Naha, so the kilns came here in the 1970s. That is a much more interesting origin than an ancient craft village and it is why the buildings look modern. **Combine with Zakimi.** The World Heritage castle ruins are ten minutes away and free.
