farmdairysheeplavenderpastoral landscape

Koiwai Farm is Japan's largest privately-owned pasture farm, covering 3,000 hectares of rolling hills used for dairy cattle, sheep grazing, and crop cultivation. The farm is open to visitors, offering pastoral landscapes of green pastures, sheep herds, old silo buildings, and distant mountain views. The farm's tree-lined One Hundred Year Forest Road is a popular photography spot — a 1.2km straight road flanked by mature trees planted in 1904. Lavender fields bloom purple in July. The farm operates restaurants serving dairy products, ice cream shops, and horseback riding activities. The landscape resembles European pastoral scenes more than typical Japanese farmland, creating a unique atmosphere.

The One Hundred Year Forest Road is the most photographed spot — best light in early morning or late afternoon when sun angles create long tree shadows. The road runs straight for 1.2km; walking its length takes 15–20 minutes. Bicycles can be rented (¥500/hour) to explore the farm's extensive grounds more efficiently. The sheep grazing pastures are accessible for close viewing; sheep shearing demonstrations occur in May. Horseback riding available for beginners (¥2,000 for 15 minutes). The farm's soft-serve ice cream is mandatory — it's made from farm-fresh milk and exceptionally creamy. Restaurants serve farm-produced dairy, lamb, and vegetables. Lavender blooms peak mid-July; fields are located near the main visitor center. Autumn (September–October) brings harvest activities and foliage. Winter opens limited areas with snow activities. The farm's scale and pastoral beauty make it unusual in Japan, where large-scale farming is rare due to mountainous geography. The farm was established during Meiji modernization as part of Japan's westernization efforts, importing Holstein cattle and western agricultural techniques. The silos and barns date to the early 20th century, representing western-style agricultural architecture. The farm hosts seasonal events including sheep festivals (May) and winter illuminations (December–February). Combine with nearby Hanamaki Onsen or Tazawako Highland for a full day trip.
