Nanrakuen is a traditional Japanese landscape garden built in 1688 for the lord of Matsuyama Domain, featuring seasonal blooms, ponds with koi and turtles, and classical garden architecture. The garden is particularly famous for 160 ume (plum) trees that bloom in February–March, followed by 30,000 iris flowers in May–June that transform the pond edges into purple and white fields.

The garden's design uses Mt. Katsuyama (Matsuyama Castle) as borrowed scenery visible beyond the garden wall.

The white and pink blossoms appear before cherry blossoms and attract far fewer crowds. Early morning visits (9:00–10:00) catch soft light filtering through branches. Weekend mornings during peak bloom feature tea ceremony demonstrations in the garden's tea house (¥500 for tea and sweet). **Iris peak:** The iris blooms transform the garden in early June when 30,000 plants bloom simultaneously around the pond edges and in dedicated beds. The peak lasts only 7–10 days before flowers fade. Visit mid-morning (10:00–11:00) when sunlight fully illuminates the blooms. **Off-season visit:** Outside plum/iris season, the garden sees minimal visitors and offers a peaceful traditional garden experience with classical elements: curved bridges, stone lanterns, tea houses, and meticulously pruned pines. Autumn (November) brings maple color but less spectacular than dedicated autumn gardens. Summer is quiet but very humid. **Photography:** Bring a zoom lens to compress the borrowed scenery of Matsuyama Castle into garden compositions. The pond's reflection shots work best in morning (calm water before wind picks up). The arched bridge provides classic Japanese garden foreground framing.
