Futami Okitama Shrine (二見興玉神社) is a coastal Shinto shrine famous for its hundreds of frog statues (蛙, kaeru) and pre-pilgrimage purification rituals. According to Shinto tradition, pilgrims traveling to Ise Jingu should first purify themselves at Futami by bathing in the ocean or performing water ablutions at the shrine. The shrine is located on the coast near the Wedded Rocks (Meoto Iwa), making it easy to visit both sites together.

The frog statues scattered throughout the shrine grounds number in the hundreds — offerings from visitors seeking good luck, safe travels, and wish fulfillment. The frog connection stems from the Japanese wordplay: 'kaeru' (蛙) means frog, but 'kaeru' (帰る) means 'to return' — thus frogs symbolize safe return from journeys, return of lost items, and return to health. Visitors pour water over the frog statues while making wishes, creating a playful, interactive shrine experience.

**Frog statue ritual:** The main frog statues sit near the shrine's purification fountain — large stone frogs with water constantly flowing over their heads. Tradition: visitors use wooden ladles to pour water over the frogs while making wishes. The frogs' smooth, worn surfaces reflect centuries of water offerings. Smaller frog statues (donated by worshippers) crowd the shrine grounds, pathways, and gardens — some stone, some ceramic, ranging from palm-sized to life-sized. Spotting and photographing unusual frog statues becomes a treasure hunt, especially for children. **Purification tradition:** Historically, pilgrims bathed in the ocean at Futami Beach before visiting Ise Jingu — a full-body purification (misogi, 禊). Today, most visitors perform abbreviated purification at the shrine's fountain by rinsing hands and mouth. However, ocean bathing is still practiced by devout pilgrims, especially during summer. Watching sunrise over the Wedded Rocks followed by shrine purification recreates the traditional pilgrimage sequence — a meditative start to an Ise Jingu visit. **Combined route with Meoto Iwa:** The shrine and Wedded Rocks are 2 minutes apart — walk the coastal path connecting them. Optimal sequence: arrive before sunrise (5:00–5:30am), watch sunrise at Meoto Iwa (if weather is clear, Mt. Fuji appears on horizon), walk to Futami Okitama Shrine for purification and frog statues, then travel to Ise Jingu Naiku. This completes the traditional pilgrimage sequence in compressed modern form (2–3 hours total).
