Hagi Castle Ruins — location in 山口縣, Hagi

山口縣 · Hagi

34.4142°N, 131.3897°E

Hagi Castle (萩城跡, Shizuki Castle ruins) occupies a promontory where the Hashimoto River meets the Sea of Japan, built in 1604 by Mori Terumoto after his defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara forced relocation from Hiroshima. The castle served as headquarters of Choshu Domain for 270 years, one of the most powerful and eventually rebellious domains that led the Meiji Restoration. The castle was voluntarily dismantled in 1874 as part of Meiji government policy abolishing feudal structures, leaving only stone foundations, moats, and walls.

Today Shizuki Park preserves the castle grounds as a Historical Site where you can walk atop the massive stone walls (6-meter-high ishigaki), explore the inner bailey foundations, and imagine the keep that once dominated this strategic coastal position. Cherry trees (600+) planted throughout create spectacular hanami destination each April. The castle's seaside location offers unobstructed views across the Sea of Japan — historically defensive, today scenic. The ruins' incomplete state (only foundations, no reconstruction) creates archaeological atmosphere where imagination fills gaps, contrasting with fully-reconstructed castles' theme-park feel.

**Walking the foundations:** The castle ruins reward exploration — the massive ishigaki (stone wall) foundations remain intact, revealing the castle's original scale. Climb the inner wall for elevated views over the grounds and sea. The main keep foundations (天守台, tenshu-dai) mark where the five-story keep stood until dismantling. Standing on these stones, you're at the command center of Choshu Domain — a region that produced the leadership (Yoshida Shoin's students) that toppled the shogunate. History resonates here. **Cherry blossom season (late March–early April):** The castle ruins host 600 cherry trees creating one of Yamaguchi's top hanami destinations. The contrast of pink petals against ancient stone walls and blue sea creates layered beauty. Evening illumination (18:00–22:00 during bloom) lights trees and walls. Arrive early morning (7:00–9:00) during peak bloom for crowd-free photography — the stone walls framed by blossoms and sea create powerful compositions. **Sea and mountain setting:** Hagi Castle's location between Mt. Shizuki (143m, behind the castle) and the Sea of Japan created defensible position — mountain protected the rear, sea provided escape route if needed. Walk to the seaward walls for unobstructed ocean views. On clear days, visibility extends 30km across the water. The exposed coastal setting creates wind and wave sounds absent at inland castles, adding sensory atmosphere. **Combine with Hagi samurai district:** Hagi Castle ruins are Near the Horiuchi samurai district, allowing efficient combination. Route: Hagi Station → bicycle rental → Shoka Sonjuku → bicycle 10 min → castle ruins → bicycle 5 min → Horiuchi samurai district → Kikuya Residence → Tamachi pottery district. Full day (6 hours) covers Hagi's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
