Hakone-Yumoto (箱根湯本) is Hakone's largest and most accessible onsen town, located at the base of the mountains where the Hayakawa River valley begins its ascent into the volcanic highlands. The town has provided hot spring bathing for over 1,200 years, with water sourced from alkaline springs throughout the Hakone region and piped to hotels, ryokan, and public bathhouses. Hakone Freepass: ¥6,100 for 2 days (includes round-trip Romance Car from Shinjuku + unlimited Hakone buses, ropeway, and cruise) — excellent value for day-trip or overnight. Car: Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto via Tomei Expressway to Atsugi IC, then Route 246 (~90 min). Or Odawara-Atsugi Road to Hakone-Yumoto.
