Odawara Castle (小田原城, Odawara-jo) was the stronghold of the Hojo clan during the Sengoku Period (1467–1615), famous for withstanding multiple sieges before falling to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 200,000-troop army in 1590. The current castle keep is a 1960 reconstruction (the original was demolished during Meiji Restoration), but the site preserves massive stone walls, moats, and the general layout of the feudal fortress that once controlled the Tokaido road connecting Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo).

The five-story castle keep houses a museum displaying samurai armor, weapons, historical documents, and dioramas explaining Odawara's strategic importance. The top floor offers panoramic views over Odawara city, Sagami Bay, and on clear days, Mt. Fuji. The castle grounds feature reconstructed gates (Akagane-mon, Umadashi-mon), a samurai residence, and seasonal plantings — cherry blossoms (late March), wisteria (May), plum (February), and hydrangea (June). The combination of history, architecture, and gardens makes this Kanagawa's premier castle site.

**Historical context:** Odawara Castle's significance lies in its role controlling the Tokaido road — the main highway connecting Kyoto (imperial capital) and Edo (shogun's seat). The Hojo clan fortified Odawara as impregnable base, successfully repelling Uesugi Kenshin (1561) and Takeda Shingen (1569) sieges. However, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 1590 siege (200,000 troops surrounding the castle for 3 months) forced surrender and marked the beginning of national unification. The castle was rebuilt under Tokugawa rule and dismantled in 1870 during Meiji modernization. Current reconstruction is historically inspired but not architecturally authentic (uses modern materials, earthquake-resistant design). **Museum highlights:** The castle keep museum's fifth floor provides 360° observation — Odawara cityscape, Sagami Bay coastline, Hakone mountains to the west, and Mt. Fuji (visible 30% of days, winter mornings best). Lower floors display Hojo clan armor (ornate designs with clan crests), siege warfare dioramas (miniature models showing 1590 Hideyoshi siege), and swords from local collections. English explanations are limited but visual displays are self-explanatory. The museum experience is educational rather than stunning — manage expectations accordingly. **Cherry blossom timing:** The castle grounds feature 300+ cherry trees blooming late March–early April (peak varies annually ±1 week). Night illumination during bloom (18:00–21:00) lights the castle and cherry blossoms, creating photogenic pink-and-white keep against dark sky. The combination of castle architecture and sakura is classic Japanese aesthetic. Crowds triple during bloom; arrive early morning (9:00 opening) for less-crowded photography. Outside cherry season, the castle is relatively quiet — plum blossoms (Feb) and hydrangea (June) provide secondary seasonal interest.
