Izumozaki has the longest continuous run of gable-entrance houses in Japan, about four kilometres of them along the old Hokkoku Kaido between the hills and the sea. Every house presents its narrow gable end to the road, with a frontage of three to six metres and a plot running far back — the shape Japanese calls an eel's bed. The reason is tax: the Edo shogunate assessed property on street frontage, so the town built deep instead of wide, and did it so uniformly that the result is a single unbroken wall of timber facades.

This was shogunal territory and the landing point for gold and silver shipped from Sado, as well as a port of call for the kitamaebune trade, which made it briefly one of the densest settlements on the Japan Sea coast. The monk-poet Ryokan was born here in 1758. The hill park named for him looks west over the sea to Sado and was voted the finest view in the prefecture.

Along the coast road through Izumozaki Town, Santo District, from roughly Ozumi to Amaze. By car from Nagaoka; Izumozaki Station on the JR Echigo Line is about 3 km inland from the old town, so a car or taxi is the practical approach. Free to walk. The Ryokan-do hall, the Izumozaki Ryokan museum and Ryokan and Sunset Hill Park are the fixed points along the route — confirm current opening hours and admission for each before travelling.

**Walk a section rather than the whole four kilometres.** The stretch through the town centre carries the highest concentration of intact facades. Driving the full length and stopping twice covers it. **The houses are private and lived in.** This is not a preserved district with open properties; almost every building is somebody's home. Photograph from the road. **Sunset is the point of Ryokan and Sunset Hill Park.** The sea faces due west with Sado on the horizon, and the view was ranked first in a prefectural poll for good reason. Clear evenings in autumn and winter give the sharpest Sado outline. **Ryokan is the local hero, not a footnote.** The poet-monk who begged, played with village children and refused a temple of his own was born in this town to a family of shipping agents. The museum and the hall are modest and the setting does most of the explaining. **Almost no facilities.** A handful of places to eat, a roadside station on the highway, and little else. Fuel up and eat before arriving.
