九十九島(雖名為99島,實際有208座)是散布於佐世保北側大村灣上的一群森林小島——這是一片沉溺河谷地形,末次冰期後海平面上升,每一道岬角都成了島。島嶼從勉強露出水面的岩礁到10公頃的森林丘陵都有,構成水道、隱密海灣與海蝕洞交織的迷宮,主要靠獨木舟才能抵達。
海面格外平靜——外圍的島嶼替內灣擋去太平洋的長浪——使九十九島非常適合新手玩海上獨木舟。標準的半日行程(3小時)探訪6–8座島,並登上一座無人島在無人的沙灘上野餐。這些島植被茂密到多數從未被開墾或開發;登島的感覺就像發現未知的疆域。
