熊本城於1607年竣工,是日本三大名城之一,也是防禦建築的傑作。2016年的地震對城堡造成嚴重損害——天守屋瓦崩塌、石垣坍塌,多座櫓樓被毀。目前仍在進行的修復工程(目標完工年份:2037年)讓遊客得以實地觀察傳統築城修復技術。
城堡最初由加藤清正設計,融入了「武者返し」彎曲石垣(無法攀爬)等創新工法,並設有大量地下儲藏空間。城郭範圍占地98公頃,是日本規模最大的城郭建築群之一。
