松江城是日本現存12座原始城堡之一,建於1611年,從未因戰爭或火災而毀損。這座五重六層的黑色天守,因其形似展翅飛翔的千鳥的破風屋頂,人稱「千鳥城」。2015年,因史料證實其建造年代,這座城堡被指定為國寶。
與經過重建的城堡不同,松江城的木造內部、陡峭階梯與防禦設施都是真實的江戶時代建築。頂層觀景台可360度俯瞰宍道湖、松江市與周邊群山。城堡深色外觀與姬路城等白色城堡形成對比,代表著不同的地方美學。
