1945年8月9日11:02,一枚鈽彈在浦上谷上空500公尺引爆,估計瞬間奪走4萬條性命,1公里半徑內化為烏有。長崎原爆資料館以文物、倖存者證言與太平洋戰爭的歷史脈絡記錄這場災難。相鄰的和平公園立有和平祈念像——一尊9.7公尺的青銅像,右手指天(核武的威脅)、左手平伸(永恆的和平)。
長崎的原爆記憶與廣島不同之處在於投彈目標:原本的目標是小倉(今北九州),因雲層遮蔽而轉向長崎。爆炸中心是浦上天主堂——當時亞洲最大的天主教堂——使長崎的基督徒社群成為第二顆原子彈始料未及的犧牲者。
