端島因外形酷似軍艦而以「軍艦島」之名廣為人知,是一座6.3公頃的水泥堡壘,曾住著5259人——創下地球史上有紀錄以來最高的人口密度。1887至1974年間,這裡是三菱經營的海底煤礦設施。煤藏枯竭後,全島人口在一天之內撤離,留下水泥公寓、學校、醫院與娛樂廳,任其承受50年的颱風與鹽蝕。
如今此島是世界遺產,僅能搭乘經認可的行程船前往。開放登島的範圍僅南側水泥護岸的一小段;其餘因結構不穩而禁止進入。從指定觀景平台望去——一排排骷髏般的水泥高塔、通往虛無的樓梯、中央集會堂坍塌的圓頂——是日本可及範圍內最反烏托邦的景象之一。
