Takada Sekaikan opened in 1911 as a theatre called Takada-za and converted to film a few years later. It has been showing films ever since, which makes it one of the oldest working cinemas in Japan and the only place where you can watch a current release inside a Meiji-era playhouse. The hall has an exposed timber-frame ceiling of a kind now almost only seen in designated cultural properties, the original projection room survives, and the columns carry Doric detailing from the period's appetite for Western architecture. The building is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and listed as modern industrial heritage.

It sits on Takada's Hommachi arcade, under the gangi — the continuous covered walkways built out over the pavement so that the town stays passable through snow that regularly reaches the first floor. The cinema is run by a small local operation and programmes new releases alongside revivals.

**Go for the room, not the film.** Whatever is showing, the ceiling and the projection booth are the point. Between screenings staff will usually let you look at the hall, and that costs nothing. **The gangi arcade outside is the other half.** Takada's covered walkways run for kilometres and are a working piece of snow-country engineering rather than a preserved streetscape. Walking Hommachi in falling snow explains the building better than any exhibit. **Combine with Takada Castle park.** The park is nearby on foot and its cherry blossom illumination in mid-April is one of the three largest night-blossom events in Japan; the lotus beds in the outer moat cover the water from late July into August. **No English subtitles as a rule.** Japanese releases screen without them. Revivals of foreign films carry Japanese subtitles, not English.
