Ukimido Pavilion — Floating Pavilion at Sunset
Ukimido (浮見堂, 'Floating Pavilion') is a hexagonal pavilion built on stilts over Sagi-ike Pond in Nara Park's southern area, creating the illusion of floating on water. The pavilion, constructed in 1916, is surrounded by willows and cherry trees that reflect in the pond, creating one of Nara Park's most photogenic scenes. The pavilion is accessible via a short footbridge and offers 360-degree views over the pond and surrounding parkland where deer graze.
The pavilion is most beautiful at sunset when golden light illuminates the wooden structure and reflects in the still water. Cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage double the visual impact through reflections. The site is less crowded than Nara Park's temple areas, offering a peaceful retreat. Deer often gather at the pond's edge to drink, adding to the picturesque quality. The pavilion is illuminated after dark year-round, creating a romantic night-time scene especially popular with photographers and couples.
