東大寺(「東方大寺」)供奉大佛——一尊752年鑄造、15公尺高的盧舍那佛青銅像,是日本最具代表性的佛教雕塑。佛像重500公噸,鑄造幾乎用盡全國的銅、也幾乎掏空國庫。光是佛手就有2.5公尺,每隻眼睛寬達一公尺。佛像坐落於大佛殿內——這座57公尺寬、50公尺高的建築是世界最大的木造建築。
東大寺在奈良時代(710–794)是全日本國分寺的總本山,代表佛教對日本政治與文化影響的巔峰。境內包括立著兇猛仁王像(8.4公尺,1203年以單株樟木雕成)的南大門、以修二會火祭聞名的二月堂,以及鹿群在古樹蔭下休憩的廣闊庭園。這座寺院的規模——無論建築或精神——即使以現代標準衡量仍令人震撼。
