奈良公園是一座660公頃的公園,逾1200頭野生梅花鹿在遊客、寺院與開闊草地間自由漫步。這些鹿自768年起被視為春日大社的神聖使者,並被指定為國家天然紀念物。牠們會靠近遊客討鹿仙貝(一包¥200),討食時還會禮貌地鞠躬——這是世代相傳、後天習得的行為。
公園境內涵蓋東大寺、春日大社、興福寺與奈良國立博物館,是日本世界遺產最密集的一區。鹿群可在所有區域自由活動,形成超現實的畫面:鹿躺在寺院台階上、在古塔旁吃草、自信地走向遊客。鹿群數量在春季產仔後可達1400頭高峰。牠們通常溫馴,但不給食物時可能會咬人或用頭頂——買了仙貝就得負責餵完。自然、野生動物與千年建築交融的氛圍,是日本其他地方所沒有的。
