Ajigaura Beach is a 4-kilometer stretch of sandy coastline facing the open Pacific, known as one of Kanto's best surf breaks. The beach is oriented northeast, catching swells from Pacific storms and creating consistent 1–2 meter waves year-round. The seabed is sandy with scattered rocks, producing both beach breaks and point breaks depending on tide and swell direction. Ajigaura hosts regional surf competitions and has a laid-back surf town atmosphere — board rental shops, wetsuit vendors, beachside cafés blasting reggae.

Beyond surfing, the beach is valued for its length and relative emptiness. Even in summer, the 4km expanse absorbs crowds, and finding a quiet stretch is easy. The sand is coarse and gray, the water cold, the vibe unpretentious. Sunrise is particularly atmospheric — the sun rises directly over the ocean, and early morning surfers paddle out into glowing orange backlight. Ajigaura is the antithesis of resort beaches — no umbrellas, no beach clubs, just sand, waves, and sky.

Ajigaura Beach is 15-min bus from Ajigaura Station (Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, 30 min from Katsuta). Open year-round. Free access. Lifeguards July–August. Board rental ¥3,000/day. Wetsuit ¥2,000/day. Best surf: autumn–spring (larger swells). Best swimming: July–August.

**Surf conditions:** Ajigaura works best on east to northeast swells, size range 1–3 meters. Autumn and winter (October–March) bring the most consistent waves but require full wetsuits (water 12–16°C). Spring (April–May) has smaller, cleaner waves and warming water. Summer (July–August) is smallest but warmest. Check surf forecasts (Surfline, Magicseaweed) before going. **Where to surf:** Beginners: the main beach break in front of the parking lot has gentle rollers and sandy bottom. Intermediates: the north jetty point break offers longer rides and hollow sections at mid to high tide. Advanced: the south reef break (called 'Ajigaura Point') has fast, powerful rights but sharp rocks — locals only. **Rental & lessons:** Several shops along the beach road rent boards and wetsuits (credit cards accepted, limited English). 'Surf Shop Barrel' offers 90-minute beginner lessons (¥5,000, includes board and wetsuit). Book online or walk in. **Best time:** Dawn patrol (6:00–8:00am) offers glassy conditions before onshore winds pick up (typically by 10:00am). Sunset sessions (4:00–6:00pm) in summer catch evening offshore breezes. **Non-surf activities:** The beach is excellent for long walks and running. The north end has tide pools with starfish, crabs, and sea anemones (accessible at low tide). The south end connects to rocky headlands good for shore fishing. **Food:** Ajigaura Beach Café (near main parking) serves coffee, smoothie bowls, and fish tacos (¥800–1,200) in a weathered wooden shack. Open 8:00am–sunset. Cash only. **Combine with:** After surfing, drive 15 min south to Hitachi Seaside Park (see separate entry) for total contrast — from raw Pacific surf to manicured flower gardens.
