Oarai Beach

**Best time to visit:** Early morning (6:00–8:00am) year-round for sunrise and solitude. In summer, the beach fills by 10:00am on weekends. Autumn (September–October) offers warm weather, fewer crowds, and the best light for photography. **Surf conditions:** The breakwaters create calm zones good for novice swimmers but eliminate surfing waves. For actual surf, go to Nakaminato Beach (3km north) or Ajigaura Beach (10km north), which face open ocean and get consistent 1–2m waves. **Fireworks festival (late July):** The Oarai Kaijo Hanabi Taikai launches 5,000 fireworks from boats 500m offshore. The beach becomes a festival ground with food stalls, beer tents, and 100,000+ spectators. Arrive by 5:00pm to secure a spot; fireworks begin at 7:30pm. The reflections on the wet sand double the visual impact. **Fishing:** The rocky jetties on both ends of the beach are productive for shore casting — sea bass (suzuki) in spring, flounder (hirame) in autumn, mackerel (saba) in summer. Locals use lures or live bait (available at tackle shops near the station). Fishing license not required for sea fishing. **Combine with:** After the beach, walk north to the Oarai Marine Tower (15 min) — a 60m observation tower with 360° views over the coast and inland to Mount Tsukuba. Then hit Kamiiso no Torii for sunset (10 min further north).
