Nakaminato is a working fishing port on the Ibaraki coast and the market beside it is where the boats' catch is sold direct — around a dozen fishmongers in a row of open-fronted sheds, with tanks, ice beds and a lot of shouting. Prices are set for people buying dinner rather than for tourists, and the volume is large enough that whole tuna, crates of monkfish in winter and mountains of shirasu whitebait are ordinary sights.

What makes it worth the trip rather than just useful is the eating. Several of the sellers run counters or small restaurants attached, and a bowl of kaisendon here costs a fraction of what the same fish would in Tokyo, three hours down the line. It is busy, it is loud, the car park queues on Sundays, and it is completely unlike the polished market halls that tourists are usually pointed at.

Minatohoncho, Hitachinaka. Around a short walk from Nakaminato Station on the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, or by car from Hitachi-Naka IC.

**Weekends open ninety minutes earlier.** If you can only come at a weekend, come at opening. **Traffic is the real problem, not the market.** The approach roads jam badly on Sunday and holiday middays. The free overflow lot on the wholesale market grounds is the local answer, and the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway from Katsuta avoids the question entirely. **Eat there.** Several stalls run attached counters doing kaisendon and grilled fish at prices that reflect being at the boat rather than at the end of a supply chain. This is the single strongest argument for the trip. **Winter is monkfish, spring is whitebait.** Anko from November to March and raw shirasu from spring into autumn are the two things this coast is known for and both are conspicuously cheaper here than anywhere inland. **No single closing day.** Individual shops rest on different days but the market as a whole never shuts, which makes it a reliable fallback when museums are closed.
