Early morning (before 7:00 AM) for solitude and side-lit torii photography. Evening (after 6:00 PM) when tour groups depart. Weekday mornings significantly quieter than weekends.

Main shrine area extremely crowded 9:00 AM-5:00 PM daily. Lower torii tunnel packed 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. Continue past first 15 minutes of torii to reduce crowds by 90%. Avoid cherry blossom season (early April), Golden Week (late April-early May), and autumn foliage weekends (November). Night visits offer solitude but require flashlight for upper trails.

**Avoiding crowds:** The shrine receives 10+ million visitors annually. For solitude, arrive before 7:00am (sunrise varies seasonally) or after 18:00 when tour groups depart. The torii tunnel is most photogenic early morning when side-lighting creates depth and shadows. Night visits are atmospheric but require flashlight for the upper trails. **Summit strategy:** Most tourists turn back after the first 15 minutes (Senbon Torii section). Continuing to the summit (233m) reduces crowds dramatically. The Yotsutsuji intersection (halfway point, 30-min ascent) provides panoramic Kyoto views and is a good turning point if not summiting. The actual summit has minimal views due to tree cover. **Fox statues meaning:** Foxes hold symbolic items in their mouths: keys (to the rice granary), jewels (wealth), scrolls (wisdom), or rice sheaves (harvest). Observing these details adds narrative depth to the shrine visit. The darker, weathered torii gates are older donations; bright orange gates are recent.
