Kyoto Station (京都駅) is a controversial modern architectural landmark designed by Hiroshi Hara (completed 1997). The 15-story glass-and-steel structure contrasts sharply with Kyoto's traditional architecture — sparking protests during construction but now recognized as a bold statement. The building's interior features a massive atrium (70m high), skyway walkways, and rooftop observation deck with city views.

The station houses 170+ shops, restaurants, and a department store (Isetan). The 171-step Grand Staircase doubles as seating for outdoor concerts and light shows. The building demonstrates that Kyoto embraces innovation alongside preservation.
